In an The editorial on the August 21, 1839 event in Southampton, Virginia, in which 55 whites were killed, the newspaper advises, “Let our southern brethren do more to enlighten their slaves and they will do much to protect themselves. Let them introduce a system of gradual amelioration and emancipation, let the black be taught that the white man does not recognize an indisputable power over body, mind and soul.” Turner is later captured and executed.
